If you’re in your breastfeeding or postpartum era, consider this your gentle nudge toward the magic of black sesame. These tiny, inky seeds are loaded with calcium which is one of the most important minerals during lactation. When you’re nursing, your body prioritizes calcium for milk production. And if you’re not getting enough from food? Your system will actually pull it from your bones. Black sesame is an easy (and delicious) way to support that demand. It also brings healthy fats, minerals, and a rich, nutty flavor that feels both nourishing and indulgent.
Enter: Black Sesame Brittle—a mineral-packed treat you can snack on anytime or crumble over a protein-rich yogurt bowl or decadent ice cream.

Black Sesame Brittle
Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups coconut sugar
- 2 tablespoons water
- ½ cup black tahini
- Pinch of kosher salt
- 3 tablespoons sesame seeds

Instructions
-
Prepare your tray.
Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat and set it aside. -
Melt the sugar.
Add the coconut sugar and water to a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir just until everything looks evenly moistened, then stop stirring. Let the mixture cook on its own until you see steady bubble form. It may look grainy at first which is totally normal. Keep cooking until it becomes a deep golden caramel and all traces of pale, crystallized sugar have melted away. If you are using a candy thermometer, continue to simmer over medium-low until the mixture reaches 300 degrees (ie the "hard crack" stage in candy lingo).
-
Add the flavor.
Working quickly, stir in the kosher salt and black tahini until smooth. Then add the sesame seeds, sprinkling in about ¼ cup at a time so they distribute evenly. -
Spread the brittle.
Immediately pour the hot mixture onto your prepared baking sheet and smooth it into a thin, even layer: somewhere between ⅛ and ¼ inch thick. -
Cool and break.
Let the brittle firm up for 20–30 minutes. Once set, tap it with the back of a knife or just break it into pieces with your hands. -
Store or serve.
Keep your brittle in an airtight tupperware for up to two weeks. We love snacking on it throughout the day or crumbling it onto yogurt or ice cream!
