The Closing of the Bones Ceremony

The Closing of the Bones is a traditional postpartum ceremony that honors the transition from pregnancy to motherhood. It supports the body, mind, and spirit in "closing" after the great opening of birth. Traditionally done within the first 6 weeks postpartum...but its healing is timeless. It’s powerful even years after birth. Follow these tips to offer a Closing of the Bones Ceremony for a special mother in your life.

Offer it after:

  • Birth
  • Loss
  • Big transitions
  • Emotional overwhelm

What you'll need:

  • 7 Rebozos or long woven wraps
  • Warm herbal oil (like calendula or arnica)
  • Quiet, cozy space
  • Cushions, blankets, or massage table
  • Gentle music
  • Optional: Foot bath, tea, smudge, crystals

Step 1: Set the Space

  • Create sacred space.
  • Dim lights
  • Light candles
  • Smudge or use floral water
  • Ground together with breath or intention

Make it safe, warm, and slow. Let her know: this is her time.

Step 2: Massage

  • Using warm oil, gently massage the belly, hips & womb.
  • Slow, intuitive strokes
  • Tune in to her breath and emotions
  • Allow space for silence or release

This reconnects her to her center and grounds her in her body.

Step 3: The Wrapping

Wrap the body at 7 energy points using the rebozos.

  • Head
  • Shoulders
  • Upper belly
  • Hips
  • Thighs
  • Knees
  • Feet

Pull gently, breathe deeply, pause often. Offer a blessing or silent holding with each.

Step 4: Rest and Integration

Leave her wrapped and resting for 10–30 mins. Offer herbal tea, music, or stillness. Let her nap, cry, or reflect. Unwrap slowly and lovingly, one layer at a time.

Aftercare and Closing

Ground her gently. Offer a nourishing snack. Invite (optional) sharing or reflection Journal prompts or affirmations. Touch her feet, brush her hair, hold her hand. Close with love, gratitude & presence.

Holding space for your new mama friend is a beautiful thing. It's about presence, being held, and coming home to herself.
