Our Favorite Hospital Bag Essentials That No One Told Us About

Hi from the Oat Mama team (we're all moms)! When we were packing our hospital bags, we spent hours researching what we would need. Most lists covered the basics: comfortable clothes, toiletries, baby outfits, chargers, and snacks. But after going through birth and postpartum ourselves, there are a few less obvious things we now recommend to every expecting mom.

Our not-so-talked-about hospital bag essentials:

  • Battery-powered tea lights to create a softer, calmer environment during labor and recovery.
  • String lights and tape to hang on the walls for *vibes*
  • A wide bristle comb. Trust us! Squeezing it into your hand can really help divert the contraction intensity.
  • A favorite essential oil or aromatherapy roller for grounding and comfort.\
  • Some organic, plastic-free tea bags
  • An extra-long phone charger because hospital outlets never seem to be where you need them.
  • A lightweight robe that makes you feel a little more like yourself.
  • Lip balm. More than one.
  • A large water bottle with a straw.
  • A playlist that helps you feel calm, empowered, or comforted.
  • Easy-to-grab nourishing snacks for both labor and those first postpartum hours.
  • number of a lactation consultant saved in your phone. The peace of mind in a few days will be worth its weight in gold.

And if we could add one more thing to that list, it would be nourishment specifically designed for the fourth trimester (I wonder what brand we're going to mention? 😉)

As moms who have been on both sides, we've seen the same pattern again and again. The fourth trimester is often when a woman's body needs the most support, yet it's also when many women struggle to nourish themselves consistently. Between feeding a newborn, recovering from birth, adjusting to a completely new routine, and operating on very little sleep, even basic self-care can start to feel difficult.

The reality is that postpartum nutrition is easier when you have simple, nourishing options available when you need them. It's about supporting your body through recovery and giving yourself the same care and attention you're giving your baby. We know it's a juggle, but it's worth the extra effort to ensure your kitchen is stocked with nourishing foods.

That's exactly why we created Oat Mama. Our bars, teas, and protein powder were designed specifically for this season of motherhood. Not as a cure or a quick fix, but as practical products that fit into real postpartum life. They're the kind of things you can reach for during a middle-of-the-night feeding, between contact naps, or on the days when sitting down for a full meal just isn't happening.

We believe nourishment can become a small daily ritual, something that belongs to you in a season that often feels consumed by everyone else's needs. A nourishing snack. A warm cup of tea. A protein boost that helps you feel supported throughout the day.

That's why we put together our New Mama Starter Kit. It includes some of our most-loved essentials for postpartum support and makes a thoughtful addition to any hospital bag, baby registry, or gift for a new mom. Because one of the best things you can pack for postpartum isn't for the baby. It's for you!

Shop the New Mama Starter Kit and give yourself the support you deserve during the fourth trimester.
